Winter sports have started off better than ever. Teams are improving on their skill, strength, and speed as they prepare to face some tough competition in the South Shore league. The Middleboro track and field team is part of this adventure. There are strong runners in both the boys and the girls teams as well as in the field. We have long distance runners and sprinters, and we have field events such as shot put, long jump, high jump, and hurdles. The sachems are two meets into their season. For some the season is halfway over but others will continue onto the league meet and other competitive competitions.

The first meet was against East Bridgewater. While both teams lost, there were individual victories across the board. For the girls, Abby Wager placed first in the mile, Jasmine Lees placed first in the 600, Katrina Bignhamass placed second in the 600, and Laura Hatch placed first in shot put. The 4×200 relay was competitive and is looking promising for upcoming meets. For the boys, Mackenzie Alioth placed first in the 55, high jump, long jump, and his relay team won their event. Evan Gavutts placed first in the 300 and was part of the same relay team. Nolan Childs competed well in the shot put. The first meet was a chance to give the coaches an idea of what they can do to win the rest of the meets knowing they weren’t going to win against East Bridgewater. There are many new athletes to the track who showed extremely well and impressed the coaches.

The second meet was a success. The girls beat Carver by 3 points at 53-49 and the boys blew Carver out of the water. It was close for the girls but by moving people around into different events and putting loads of pressure on them, they were able to pick up points for the team. Abby Wager and Jaycie Dicarlo doubled in the mile and two mile, Caitlin Swanson took first in the thousand, Katrina Binghamass took third in the 600. Jasmine Lees took third in the mile with Abby in first, Jaycie Dicarlo took third in the two mile with Abby in first. Katelyn Harrington took first in the 55 hurdles, Olivia Benson took first in the 300, and the 4×200 relay took first. Points came from all around the board which resulted in the win. The boys took points from everywhere to put them over the top. Mackenzie Alioth took first in all his events. Evan Gavutts took first in the 300 and competed in the winning relay. Nathan Yudichak took first in the 55 hurdles. Michael Oshanissay took first in the mile and the two mile, and there were many second and third place finishes that gave the boys more points.

There was a major difference between the first and the second meet. People were trying things out for the first time and they had no idea what to expect from the other teams or themselves. The second meet put a lot of pressure on the athletes, especially the girls who needed to pull points from anywhere they could. All the athletes ran their hardest and some resulted with their own personal records. The next meet is in three weeks so the sachems have time to relax, recover, and then get started on some hard work to make their times even better.
